August Highlights

This Saturday will mark 2 months in Saudi for us. Can't believe how fast it went by. The kids have started school, have started making friends...and our sea shipment arrived last week! So we've been busy unpacking and getting organized. We are gradually settling into a routine of school, homework, after school activities, etc. So here's a smattering of random photos taken over the past month:

El Chico's- we have 1 Mexican restaurant on camp- it's surprisingly decent. And when the kids get balloons, it's a double win!
The 1st weekend in August Brian went to Yanbu with some friends to dive in the Red Sea. Sorry, no underwater pics...but their last day they drove out to see some ruins:
8/8 was Dibb Saltwater Crocodile Day. We celebrated by going to check out Scitech. We loved going to Scitech in Perth. This Scitech here was ok- not great- lots of displays were out of order. Oh well! I loved when Mina asked me what this display was...and I couldn't tell her b/c I can't read Arabic. (If anyone knows what this is please let us know!)
Mei, journeying to the center of the earth.
Lots of Olympics watching at our house. It was hard b/c of the time difference...but we definitely cheered on the Final Five!
Mina's Rules (posted on her bedroom door)
Celebrating National S'mores Day- Emiko got a little messy!
Bowling with new friends! All summer the kids have been asking when their "future friends" will arrive. They started arriving a couple weeks ago and the girls have loved meeting lots of new kids- finally!
First day of school antics (pictured with Cosette, Emiko's new friend that lives down the street)
Obligatory 1st day of school pics
Celebrated the 1st day of school with dinner out at the Hobby Farm (basically a snack shack next to the horse farm). Girls thought it was so cool to pet a mini horse.
The next day Mei had transportation safety day- it's a shortened day where a parent rides with the student on the bus to help their child feel comfortable riding the bus and getting a basic orientation at school (finding classroom, meeting teacher, etc). Unfortunately, there were some kinks in the bus route and no one came to pick up Mei. After calling, they sent a bus out to pick us up...but we ended up missing most of the orientation. Oh well. We did have fun riding in the back of the bus though!
Mei's official first day of school- the school buses here are a lot nicer than what I rode when I was a kid!
A random morning sunrise photo...sometimes I wake up at 5:00 so I can run in humid 90 degree weather instead of humid 115 degree weather!
Last weekend we drove to another Aramco camp that's on the beach about 45 minutes away. It's a pretty nice beach especially for Saudi standards. Despite the water feeling like bath water...we still had fun with friends playing games, building sand castles, searching for seashells and hermit crabs. It was a good day.
Not sure what Mei was doing here but it was photo worthy b/c of her pose!
It was a pretty sunset but it was setting in the wrong place. I miss our Perth sunsets over the water. Oh well!

Positives:
1) "Future friends" have arrived! The kids have settled really well into their classes at school and have started making new friends.
2) We saw a hoopoe in our backyard the other day...it's such a cool looking bird (google it)!
3) Free preschool- half days every day! And you saw those deluxe looking school buses right?! They're really nice!
4) Sea shipment arrival- I already mentioned it but it's worth listing here b/c it sure does make a house feel more like a home once you have your own belongings and furniture.
5) Monthly potlucks with our fellowship group. Back in Perth we had Soup Sundays once a month and the kids loved it. They're excited our group here does something similar (what's not to love about a potluck?)- we've been to 2 now and it's a great way to meet/visit with people.
